In Memory

From Amherst Magazine ---

David N. Smith, Jr died in November after a 3 year battle with cancer. We remember him at Amherst always with a smile on his face and a willingness to engage. His family and community will recall his sharp wit and huge sense of humor.

David is survived by his wife, Renie, of 52 years, 3 children, and 4 grandchildren. Family was always paramount among David's loves.

Following Amherst, David received an M.A. in English (Occidental College) and a Harvard M.B.A. He was a business consultant for his entire career, including being a Partner at Booz Allen Hamilton; he especially enjoyed mentoring young employees.

David had a passion for the arts. In our 50th Reunion book, he described how he began "reading authors from first published word to last, and followed that path for two decades"; he was part of a stimulating monthly book club in Cleveland.

He and Renie were subscribers to the Cleveland Orchestra for years; Schubert was his favorite. They traveled extensively, particularly to pursue favorite works of art, like Donatello's sculptures.

David was committed to Cleveland and to public education. He was a volunteer math tutor and was on the Board of Directors of the McGregor Foundation, a private philanthropic organization whose mission is "supporting seniors in need and those who serve them." He was particularly proud of being a Co-founder and Board member of the Heights Youth Club, which was developed to provide children with meaningful academic and cultural activities after school and in summer. Its mission is "to provide a positive and safe environment for youth to learn and develop skills related to education, interpersonal growth and community involvement." David found great joy working with Cleveland kids. He and Renie were honored for their roles in the Club in the spring of 2015.
