The Amherst motto is Terras Irradient, "let them give light to the world." While meant metaphorically, this spring Amherst Today will ponder "light" literally, through an interdisciplinary lens. What effect does human energy extraction and consumption have on the world economically, ecologically, geologically and socially? Panels of experts will discuss fracking, energy economics, sustainability and nuclear energy and proliferation. Tours of Amherst College sustainability projects will bring the theoretical energy discussion to the physical campus.

Speakers include Amherst professors Edward Melillo, associate professor of History and Environmental Studies; Anna Martini, professor of Geology; and David Delaney, senior lecturer in Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought. Panels feature many expert Amherst alumni and parents, including Mary Doswell P'17,'17, senior vice president, Dominion Energy Solutions; David Feldman '00, senior financial analyst, National Renewable Energy Laboratory; Jon May P'19, executive director, The Carbon Neutral Company; Frederick Fucci '81, partner, Troutman Sanders; Emily Levin '00 from Vermont Energy Investment Corporation; David McGann '87, P'19,'17, renewable energy development for Panasonic Eco Solutions; Jeff Phillips '74, sustainability consultant and former executive vice president of Seventh Generation. Greg Donat '84, P'16, Partner at Casablanca Capital LP, and Michelle Stewart, Pick visiting assistant professor of Environmental Studies, will moderate panels. Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins '82, coordinator for threat reductions programs in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation for the Department of State, will give the keynote.

Space is limited. Registration is $75 per person (includes program and meals).
