In Memory

On the cover of our 50th reunion book are photos of several classmates, including one of Bob Lindemann, on horseback and attired in his red hunting coat. An avid equestrian, Bob began fox hunting at age 57. He served as president of Rocky Fork Hunt Club in Columbus, Ohio, and as its master of foxhounds. He took his last ride in late December. Shortly thereafter, he became ill and died on Jan. 13 at age 88.

Bob remained remarkably fit throughout his life. Stella and I accompanied him and Polly, his wife of 60 years, on several of the international trips led by Bill Maloney ’51, and we clearly recall their vigorously ascending elevated sites on the Greek Isles, the Galápagos Islands and in the mountains of Rumania.

Bob grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and graduated from University School in 1945. He served in the Army in Japan and thus became one of the many veterans in the Amherst class of 1951. Our dads were classmates and fellow Dekes at Western Reserve University, so it was fitting that Bob and I became classmates, Dekes and close friends at Amherst.

In his 20s, Bob was transferred by his employer from Cleveland to Columbus. There he met and married Polly and joined her family’s real estate firm, which he eventually owned and managed. Until shortly before he died, Bob diligently went to his office almost every day.

Bob was active in his church, St. Matthew’s, serving on the vestry and three search committees. He also was board chairman of Alfred L. Willson Children’s Center.

In addition to Polly, he is survived by his children, Leila, Emily and Peter; their spouses; and five grandchildren.

Bob was a dear friend of mine for 68 years and of many Columbus and Amherst chums. We all will miss him.

David C. Fulton ’51
