50th Reunion Book Entry

In Memory

About a month ago I received a note from Rosie listing his new address with no comments about his health. Thus, I was surprised and saddened to learn that he passed away on Jan. 28. I was notified by Bob Martin ’49, who knew that Rosie had been battling emphysema.

Born in New Jersey in 1928, Rosie attended Westwood High School. At Amherst he joined Theta Delt and started a highly successful undergraduate life. A natural athlete, he played football and basketball, but achieved his true stardom in baseball, where he lettered all four years, becoming captain junior and senior terms. He is remembered as a powerful and consistent hitter along with “a good glove.”

Affable and popular, he was a member of the Student Council and Sphinx. He was a tad younger than many of the class, and his military experience was in the Korean War; he was a naval aviator, rank of lieutenant. He served from 1951 to 1955 and had his share of those harrowing landings at sea on a moving carrier.

He married his college sweetheart, Barbara Corves (Mt. Holyoke), in 1952. They were blessed with twin sons, Richard and John. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce, and in 1995, he married Jeanne Carnine, who most tragically predeceased him in 2010.

After wartime service, he had a short stint with the Martin Co. in Baltimore and White Sands, N.M., before entering the financial world and spending 18 years as a stockbroker with E.F. Hutton in La Jolla, Calif. (elite duty!), and then as a mortgage broker in San Diego until retirement in 1995 and some serious golf and travel. Though he lived most of his life on the West Coast, he stayed loyal to Amherst and attended most reunions. The class will truly miss Rosie.
