In Memory

Bob Raithel died March 23, 2016, in Pensacola, Fla., having retired there with his wife, Millie, in 1992. Uncommonly for one of our generation, he returned to his hometown, Verona, N.J., to live and work, teaching for 30 years at the H.B. Whitehorn Middle School there.

At Amherst, Bob majored in English and played varsity tennis and squash. His life reflected those interests in his teaching of English, social studies and Spanish, as well as continuing involvement in racquet sports, which expanded to Ping-Pong. He loved football and attending his daughter’s field hockey and lacrosse games.

A year after Amherst graduation, Bob enlisted in the Marine Corps and served for four years, leaving as a first lieutenant. He was proud of that service and was buried with full military honors. During his time in service, he met and married Millie, beginning more than 56 years of life together. They have four children— Jeff, Tim, Sheryl and Rob—and one grandchild.
