In Memory

Joe Beckford died April 5. He is survived by wife Maryanne, four children and 12 grandchildren.

A native of the Boston area and graduate of St. Mark’s, Joe majored in history at Amherst and was vice president of Phi Psi. After college Joe went to Yale Law School, working summers at Camp Mowglis “School of the Open” in New Hampshire, where he eventually became assistant director and served on the board of trustees.

Following law school, Joe joined the U.S. Navy as a lawyer in San Francisco (where he met and later married Maryanne Convey of New York City) and then practiced with the large San Francisco law firm of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen.

Not satisfied with his professional life at that point, Joe proceeded to earn an M.B.A. from Harvard and spent six years as a corporate officer with Southeast Banking Corp. in Miami, following which he returned for good to California and the practice of law. There, among other things, he authored and updated biannually the LexisNexis Bank Holding Company Compliance Manual originally published by Matthew Bender.

After 30 years in Palo Alto, he moved his family and practice to Folsom, where he was active with the Folsom Democrats, Powerhouse Ministries and Rotary Club of Historic Folsom, while devoting himself to his loving family.

On a personal note, Joe and I knew each other from the days of freshman football at Amherst and roomed together all three years in law school. We kept in touch through the years, mostly by phone, and I would be remiss not to add that he was a caring, wonderful friend and in my view a very special human being.
