In Memory

Dr. Lee Wallace “Wally” Dean III passed away peacefully in the presence of family on May 4 in Hartford, Conn. After graduating from Amherst, he obtained a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in physics in 1960. He was a professor of physics at MIT until 1967, when he left to take a position at Pratt and Whitney aircraft in East Hartford, Conn., in the acoustics department. While there, he published several scientific articles on the acoustics of aircraft engines and was an inventor on multiple patents concerning sound reduction materials for jet engines.

Wally was an avid stamp collector and a world expert on the stamps and postal marking of Haiti. He won several medals for his Haitian stamp exhibits and was a judge for national and international philatelic associations. He retired in 1987 to focus on philately, music and his main joy—his family. He is survived by wife Geraldine, two sons and three daughters, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
