Amherst Earns Nod for "Quirky" Commencement Tradition —
A Boston Globe article on quirky commencements describes Amherst's practice of giving each graduate a Conway Cane—a symbol of "how a college education can support students' lives long after they leave school." The tradition dates to the 1800s and was revived and reshaped by the class of 2003.

Yvonne Green '17 Named Beinecke Scholar — The Albuquerque, N.M., native is among 20 college juniors receiving the national
graduate school scholarship this year. She plans to use it to pursue her goal of becoming a history professor. Among the eight previous Amherst recipients are Edward Adams '86, now professor of English at Washington and Lee University, and Vanessa L. Fong '96, associate professor of anthropology at Amherst.
