Richard S. Preston died Nov. 7, 1984, at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, New York, after a short illness. He was 36 and had resided in New York City for many years.

Mr. Preston was born in Orange, N.J. He was a 1965 graduate of Millburn (N.J.) High School.

He graduated cum laude from Amherst in 1969. While there he won the American Academy of Poets’ Prize in 1967-68.

Mr. Preston was also a 1977 graduate of the School of Arts and Science at Fordham University, where he received a master’s degree in public communications.

One of his plays, a musical on the life of Sigmund Freud, entitled Sigmund, was produced off-off Broadway in 1972.

He had been employed at CBS, at the Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency and, at the time of his death, at the Doyle Dane Bernbach advertising agency as manager of video technology-programming in cable TV.

He is survived by his mother, Joan Rivers; his father, Willard Preston; two brothers, James and Willard Preston; and two sisters, Joan Erickson and Laura Preston.
