In Memory

The Class mourns the loss of Eric Anton Winther who died on Aug. 9, 1979, at the age of 32, following a long and painful battle with cancer.

Eric was born and raised in Bloomington, Ind., where his father, the late Oscar Winther, was a professor at Indiana University. At Amherst he was a member of Chi Phi and the DQs.

After graduating from Amherst, he received master’s degrees in American literature and creative writing from Indiana. He also received a J.D. from Rutgers Law School, where he was special articles editor for the Rutgers University Law Review. Subsequently admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey, he was a member of the law firm of Parker, Chapin, Flattau & Klimpl in New York City.

Fraternity brother Michael Kramer ’67 wrote “A friendship with Eric was a delight. He had a warm, wry sense of humor, and he was ‘laid back’ before the term became a cliché.”

Eric roomed with Kent Jones ’69 (also a Chi Phi) during most of the four years. Late in his senior year he met, and later married, Lynn.

Eric’s death is not only a sobering reminder of our own mortality; it is a terribly sad loss of an unusually bright and engaging classmate.

Eric’s survivors include his wife, his mother and a sister.
