College Releases Statement on Campus Event — This week regional news outlets incorrectly reported on the purpose and origin of an event at the College's Chapin Chapel in support of immigrant students. Though early regional media accounts reported that the event was a College-sponsored effort to designate Chapin Chapel as a sanctuary space, the event was privately organized by multifaith religious advisers.  News outlets later offered clarification or retraction of their earlier stories. The College's statement about the erroneous early news also emphasized that Amherst cares deeply for students worried about immigration issues and is providing a wide range of resources to assist them, all within the limits of the law. In November, President Biddy Martin wrote a letter expressing the College's position on student immigration issues.
