Salon View of William Weary’s Print Collection
Salon View of Dr. William Weary’s Print Collection

This exhibition follows Dr. William A. Weary on his decades-long journey collecting works of art on paper, primarily prints. After initially collecting a broad range of prints, Dr. Weary’s keen aesthetic preferences emerged, defining an intellectual framework that underpinned his collecting mission. An infatuation with all manner of “scapes”—land, city, river, and ports—is the unifying theme of the collection.

The exhibition will consider Dr. Weary’s print collection in the context of the “Etching Revival,” a movement that emerged after the first half of the nineteenth century in Europe, and had lasting influences across the Atlantic until the late 1930s. It liberated printmaking from a primarily reproductive role, stressing its potential for original expression through both technique and subject matter.
