Colgate Freiburg Study Group

A Colgate faculty member directs the program for the semester. Some courses are taught for program students and some are taken directly at the host institution, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität. Program dates are consistent with the German academic calendar: mid-March to mid-July. Click here for more information.

Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Berlin

In Berlin, students can enjoy a metropolitan experience in a city of 3.5 million inhabitants while taking courses at Freie Universität, one of the capital's two public universities. Enrolling in courses in any number of disciplines, students study and live in this very international, yet very German city. By studying and living alongside their German peers, students have the unique chance to improve their German while choosing courses from the entire academic curriculum. Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Mainz

In Mainz, a city with a population of 280,000 located about 30 minutes from Frankfurt, students can experience the legendary 'Gemütlichkeit' of the Rhineland while enrolling in courses alongside their German peers in fields ranging from art history to physics at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität. For the student who is fascinated by history, architecture, German culture, and life in a city catering to a student population of 36,000, Mainz offers a wealth of opportunities. Situated on the Rhine river, the city blends both rural and urban worlds. By studying and living alongside their German peers, students have the unique chance to improve their German while choosing courses from the entire academic curriculum. Freie Universität Berlin: Berlin European Studies

FUB invites applications for its undergraduate FU-BEST (Berlin European Studies) program.

  • Based on the U.S. academic calendar, FU-BEST offers a strong intensive German language program as well as an exciting menu of content courses taught mostly in English but also in part in German.
  • There is no language prerequisite for participation in this program, but all participants are obligated to enroll on-site in German language training at their particular level.
  • The content courses cover topics from a variety of disciplines, ranging from political science, history, philosophy, and sociology to music history, architecture, film studies, marketing/management, environmental studies, sociology, and art history. A new course on Media Politics will be available as well.
  • The program has hosted participants from a wide range of mostly U.S. colleges and universities, featuring a growing number of formal institutional partnerships. Student feedback has been very positive.
  • Every semester features a week-long off-site excursion (in the case of Spring 2012, the participant group will be divided in two and will travel to Stockholm/Oslo and to Nuremberg/Prague, respectively), as well as local field-trips and cultural events.
  • Participants are housed in homestays or single-occupancy apartments, but may also opt out of these choices if they set up their own housing sufficiently in advance of the program.

Students may apply directly to FU-BEST (after approval at their home institution) or via their home college/university (especially where an institutional partnership exists).

Smith College: Smith in Hamburg

Smith College offers an academic year or spring semester program in Hamburg, Germany. This long-standing program is the only U.S. program at Universität Hamburg. 

Students may take courses at the Smith Study Center and at the University. Classes at the University are taken alongside local students, mostly in German but, with some exception, the program allows students to take courses in English.

University of Massachusetts: Baden-Württemberg Exchange

The University of Massachusetts offers an academic year/semester program at the universities of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Students in the program enroll in regular university courses at one of the nine Baden-Württemberg institutions: Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen, Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, or Ulm. The program’s office in Freiburg assists students with all academic and personal matters. Courses in all majors (except studio art and instrumental/voice instruction) are available to undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants should have two years of college-level German or equivalent when the program begins, if they plan to enroll in regular university courses taught in German.
