Janne Höltermann is a native German who currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and primarily works in video. She graduated from Muthesius Academy Kiel, Germany and has a MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston. She has been awarded residencies at Yaddo, and Flux Factory and received travel grants from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) She has been a Visiting Artist at Wesleyan University, and participated in the Bronx Museum's AIM program. Recently her work has been supported by the Film Funding Foundation of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein (FFHSH).
She has exhibited extensively at, among others, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, Deutscher Künstlerbund Berlin, Museum of Contemporary Art Basel, NURTUREart Brooklyn, WPA Washington and MICA Baltimore, C.A.R. Zollverein Essen and Museum of Fine Arts Bremen.
The video installations in this exhibition look at ways of how our embodied sense shapes our perception of physical environments and how programmed movement can result in abstracted repetitive patterns. At times the camera takes on the role of a protagonist when it is choreographed through athletic sites. Other times video is used to condense time and to draw the linear motion traces of airplanes into a traffic map.
