Amherst Center for Russian Culture History

In 1991, 26 boxes of A. Remizov and S. Remizova-Dovgello Papers were donated to the Amherst College Center for Russian Culture by Thomas Whitney, Amherst College Class of 1937.  Mr. Whitney bought this collection in the 1960s from the widow of Konstantin Solntsev, Russian émigré and passionate collector of materials documenting Russian cultural heritage.  After S. Remizova-Dovgello's death in 1943, A. Remizov became a close friend of K. Solntsev.  Apparently, Soltsev's intention was to organize a Museum of Russian Émigré Literature in Paris.  In order to support this idea, Remizov bequeathed to Solntsev a significant portion of his extensive personal papers.

In addition to the principal collection, one box of photographs, legal documents, and writings was added to the papers by Thomas Whitney in 1993.

In 1993, when the collection was reappraised, internal evidence suggested that K. Solntsev arbitrarily incorporated into Remizov's material several other collections.  In 1994, Vladimir Dixon Papers and Ivan Shkott Papers were removed from A. Remizov and S. Remizova-Dovgello Papers and maintained as separate collections.
