This collection documents the life and activities of Russian émigré journalist and social worker Irene Graham (1910-1996) and Russian émigré composer Arthur Lourie (1892-1966). The papers are organized in five series.
Series 1: Correspondence, 1921-1996, 1 linear foot, contains correspondence of Irene Graham, which is further divided into four subseries: Cataloged Correspondence; Arranged Correspondence; Outgoing Correspondence, and Professional Correspondence. This series contains Graham’s correspondence with leading Russian intellectuals, such as Ivan Bunin, Aleksei Remizov, Nikolai Evreinov, Viktor Mamchenko, and many famous musicians, such as Alain Malreaux, Gidon Kremer, and others. These subseries are organized alphabetically by correspondent and each folder is arranged in chronological order. Most unidentified correspondence has been placed in the beginning of the subseries.
Series 2: Writings, 1942-1996, 1.75 linear feet, reflects Irene Graham’s journalist’s career both in Shanghai and the U.S. This material is organized by type and consists of drafts and research notes, published and unpublished essays, short stories and libretto arranged in alphabetical order. Clippings are arranged in chronological order. This series also includes one folder with writings by other authors. The series is further divided into four subseries.
Series 3: Personal Materials, 1948-1996, 0.2 linear feet, consists of Irene Graham’s financial statements, copyright statement and personal documents.
Series 4: Photographs, 1930s-1990s, 0.3 linear feet, contains cataloged and arranged photographs of Irene Graham and her contemporaries, as well as slides and negatives.
Series 5: Arthur Lourie Papers, 1941-1996, 0.75 linear feet, consists of correspondence related to his family and professional activities, music scores, mostly copyists’ manuscripts, personal documents, photographs, published music and writings about him. The series is organized alphabetically and each folder is arranged in chronological order.
