New Science Center Celebrated with Inquiry, Demos

“You now have the gold standard science center for college campuses,” said the architect of the newest Amherst building on Oct. 20. The grand opening celebrated the building in the most scientific way possible: through observations and questions.

Soccer Program Named for Beneskis

On Oct. 18, Amherst recognized Ted Beneski ’78, P’08 and Laurie Beneski P’08 for their leadership and generosity in the Promise campaign by naming the men’s and women’s soccer program in their honor. “We know firsthand how educational and transformative athletics can be for students,” the Beneskis said, “enhancing their academic and social lives, teaching important life lessons and instilling values that carry forward long after graduation.”


More Than a Monster

Two centuries ago, a young woman wrote what some have called the world’s first science fiction novel. This fall, Amherst is marking the 1818 publication of Mary Shelley’s most enduring creation with a course on “Frankenstein: The Making of a Monster.”

Two Artists, Eight Landscapes, 175 Years Apart

An exhibition in Frost Library features paintings by scientific illustrator Orra White Hitchcock (featured in the Fall 2018 Amherst magazine) and Senior Resident Artist David Gloman that depict the same landscapes roughly 175 years apart.


Professor George’s Side Gig

By day, Alexander George is Amherst’s Rachel and Michael Deutch Professor of Philosophy. By night, he’s an eerily accurate mentalist. Watch as he demonstrates a feat with Katherine Duke ’05, and look out for Duke’s feature article about George’s act in the upcoming winter issue of Amherst magazine.
