About the Exhibition

This exhibition presents some of the ways in which artists have employed collage, and the related forms of photomontage and film montage, throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As a technique, collage involves the physical layering of disparate elements often borrowed from other contexts. This capacity for fragmenting and combining have rendered collage both an inexhaustible medium and emblematic of the ever-changing modern world.

Drawn from the museum’s permanent collection as well as loans from Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, the exhibition features works by Joseph Cornell, Romare Bearden, Olga Rozanova, and Robert Rauschenberg among others.
