Egan to Headline College’s LitFest

Marking its fourth year, the popular literary festival will feature Pulitzer-winning novelist Jennifer Egan, as well as acclaimed authors Elizabeth Kolbert, Charles C. Mann ’76, Jamel Brinkley, Brandon Hobson and Nuar Alsadir ’92, among others. The Feb. 27–March 2 festival is free and open to the public.


Artist-in-Residence Shayla Lawson on Frank Ocean

Oregon Public Broadcasting interviewed poet Shayla Lawson, artist-in-residence at Amherst, about her 2018 book I Think I’m Ready to See Frank Ocean, which grew out of her meditations about the singer, songwriter and rapper—and which also manifested as a series of live performances and videos with her band, the Oceanographers.


Watch the Bluestockings in Concert

Inspired by NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, Amherst students created a mini-concert series last year to unite disparate musical scenes among the Five Colleges. In this video, Amherst’s Bluestockings perform three original a cappella arrangements.


Amherst Named Leader in Black Enrollment

The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reports that the College has one of the highest percentages of black first-year students among elite liberal arts colleges. Black students make up 15.5 percent of the Amherst class of 2022. Read the report.


Martin Responds to Hampshire’s News

When Hampshire College announced that its current operations cannot be sustained over the long term and that it is seeking a new partner, President Biddy Martin wrote that she hopes the school can “identify a positive way forward for its community and the greater good.”
