Class Deans
Each class year at Amherst has a class dean within the Office of Student Affairs. Class deans can help students develop personal and educational goals, and plans to help them realize these objectives; collaborate with faculty members to support students’ success in the classroom, facilitate access to academic and non-academic support services at the college, answer questions about many aspects of college life, and provide other forms of support—including during times when students are experiencing personal challenges and need assistance. Faculty are encouraged to contact a student’s class dean with any concerns they have about a student’s academic performance and/or well-being. Academic Technology Services
The Academic Technology Services (ATS) team works with faculty members, instructional staff, and students to enhance teaching, learning, and research through the effective, innovative, and meaningful integration of digital technologies. The ATS team also focuses on supporting the college community in creating digitally accessible materials, with the goal of reaching all users, and contributing to an inclusive environment. The Center for Community Engagement
The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) supports initiatives that link experience with theory and reflection. The CCE serves as a resource for faculty members as they develop and implement assignments, courses, research projects, and summer experiences that give students opportunities to link learning inside and outside of the classroom, tackle problems that matter, and develop skills that they can apply in other settings. The CCE offers faculty members who are incorporating community- and project-based learning into their teaching and research the technical support they need, in whatever form it may take. The Center for Teaching and Learning
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) collaborates with faculty, instructional staff, and other campus partners—drawing on evidence-based practices—to embrace the challenges of teaching and learning in a complex, globalized, and digitized world. The CTL offers a variety of support and programming throughout the academic year, including curricular design for departments, course design for faculty, building assignments and assessments, identifying pedagogical resources, and developing strategies for soliciting and interpreting student feedback to support teaching. The Strategic Learning Center
The Strategic Learning Center (SLC) assists students with skills related to how we think and learn, including those surrounding executive functioning and metacognition. The SLC works with students to develop and hone such skills, including note-taking, multi-tasking, organization, time management, and more. All students can benefit from such skills, and so the center is also a resource for faculty to learn about how they might integrate learning strategies into their teaching. The Writing Center: for Writing, Reading, and Public Speaking
In the Writing Center, students learn to interpret prompts, brainstorm ideas, develop arguments, organize essays and presentations, practice, and revise. Students may schedule consultations with the writing center's team of professional writing and speaking associates for support at any stage of a project. In the Writing Center, students build confidence as writers, speakers, and readers in a supportive and creative environment. Frost Library: Research and Instruction Librarians
Research and instruction librarians work with courses across all departments and levels each year, teaching research skills in the context of specific classes and assignments. Together with their colleagues in Archives and Special Collections, research and instruction librarians partner with faculty to develop ways to facilitate students' critical and creative thinking about research, helping to design and sequence research assignments across semesters or throughout majors. The librarians teach approaches and strategies, as well as particular sources and tools for finding, questioning, and creating new knowledge.
The Mead Art Museum
The Mead Art Museum connects people, art, and curricula. Using the museum and its collections as sites and sparks for learning across disciplines and topics, Mead educators work with faculty to develop assignments, projects, and programs that deepen learning objectives. The Mead’s portfolio of projects ranges from one-time visits to semester-long course partnerships, and the museum’s educators work well with a range of disciplines, from American studies to chemistry to the history of art, and more. The Moss Quantitative Center
The Moss Quantitative Center aims to support faculty who teach quantitative courses. The center works with math and science departments to support student learning outside the classroom, offering individual appointments, as well as drop-in hours and review sessions. Students can schedule appointments with staff for work in selected math, biology, chemistry, and physics courses and math comprehensive exams. The Q Center is located in rooms D109, D107, and D111 in the joint Q Center/science library space in the science center and is always open for studying. Staff contact Information
The Office of Sustainability
The Office of Sustainability works with Amherst faculty across the disciplines who are interested in incorporating sustainability topics and concepts into their courses. The office hosts a monthly Affiliate Faculty Program that brings together faculty to discuss teaching opportunities on campus and in the community that have a sustainability focus.
