The Amherst Mathematics Quantitative Fellow is a Green Dean position based in the Moss Quantitative Center. We seek applications from current Amherst seniors and recent Amherst alumni who would be interested in providing support to students in intermediate math courses. The successful candidate must be able to teach and encourage students of diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, international students, and students with varying mathematical preparation.

Responsibilities of the Mathematics Q Fellow will include the following:

  • Providing support, in the form of drop-in tutoring, individual tutoring, and workshops, for students in two courses each semester: either the intermediate courses on Proof and Theory (Math 220/221) or Linear Algebra (Math 271/272), as well as at least one of Groups, Rings and Fields (Math 350) or Introduction to Analysis (Math 355);
  • Coordinating with faculty members teaching those courses;
  • Working with the department and Q Center Math staff and director to develop and evaluate resources for students in those courses;
  • Helping students prepare for the Math comprehensive exam over Interterm;
  • Planning events to build community among mathematics majors at Amherst, as well as other outreach activities to support students taking mathematics

This position is a great opportunity to make a difference for students in mathematics courses. Requirements include strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, and a facility with online communication. Applicants should have a strong interest in mathematics education and in working with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The Mathematics Q Fellow should be self-directed and enthusiastic and should enjoy working with people. The fellow will need to be confident and comfortable working closely with both faculty and students.

This is a twelve-month position running from July 2022 through June 2023.
