Sustainability Across the Curriculum

Educating for the Future

By educating future leaders, scholars, workers, and professionals, higher education institutions are uniquely positioned to prepare our students to understand and address sustainability challenges. Amherst College is actively working to incorporate sustainability into its curriculum and co-curriculum and engage students, faculty, and staff in tackling and exploring real-world sustainability problems and solutions.

First launched in 2014 and originally situated in the facilities division, the Office of Sustainability was re-envisioned and re-launched in 2022. We now reside in academic affairs and focus on integrating sustainability into every aspect of Amherst College from the curriculum to the co-curriculum to the operations of the college.

What’s Next

  • Expanding the summer student interns program beyond campus to include a wide array of community partners.
  • Growing the number of faculty and staff working with the office and participating in the faculty - staff sustainability affiliate program.
  • Building out a Campus as Living Learning Labs program that facilitates use of the Amherst campus for teaching and research purposes.
  • Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration around sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
