Religious Advisors and the Cadigan Center for Religious Life

The various religious advisors share in the guidance and counseling program of the College and organize campus religious activities and special events. Students of all religious traditions are encouraged to organize activities, and all religious groups, adjunct advisors and religious affiliates working with students are asked to register with the Rev. Dr. Paul Sorrentino, the director of religious life. Chapin Chapel, meeting rooms in Chapin Hall and the Cadigan Center are made available upon request.

In 1998, the College converted a former faculty residence, built in 1967, into the Cadigan Center for Religious Life. It contains the offices of the religious advisors, a large living room, a dining area, a conference room and two kitchens, one for common use and one for kosher/halal meal preparation. Student religious groups use the Center for meetings and fellowship, including weekly Jewish Sabbath gatherings, coffeehouses with poetry and music, Bible study, faculty lectures and meditation, among other activities. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and may be reserved for additional times. The campus community is welcome to use the building for studying or activities (please see usage information below for scheduling). The building offers wireless connections, computers, comfortable couches and tables and chairs.

The Cadigan Center for Religious Life is located at 38 Woodside Avenue. The general phone number is (413) 542–8489. Reservations to use its facilities, as well as Chapin Chapel, may be made through the administrative assistant to the religious advisors, Diane Dix, in 108 Chapin Hall ((413) 542–2181 or Anyone is welcome to make reservations, but priority will be given to individuals and organizations identified with any of the student religious groups or with the activities of the religious advisors.

The following religious groups hold regular services and activities: the Christian Fellowship (ACF), the Hermenia T. Gardner Bi-Semester Christian Worship Series, Hillel, the Mindfulness Club, the Multifaith Council, the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and the Newman Club. All of the religious advisors hold regular office hours and will schedule appointments at other times as well. Because all of the advisors are part-time, it is best to contact them to schedule an appointment if it is not during regular office hours. For office hours and other information, go to the Religious Life website. The advisors and their contact information are listed below. Specific groups they advise are in parentheses, but all advisors are available to all members of the campus community.

Policy on Observance of Religious Holidays

Amherst College respects the rights of all members of the community to observe religious holidays. It is expected that everyone will cooperate in making this right a real one. Students, faculty and staff should seek ways of achieving this goal, while at the same time minimizing interruption of the academic and other work of the College.
