Tenure-Track Sabbatical Fellowships
Following reappointment, tenure-track faculty members, provided they have taught for six semesters, are eligible for two semesters of sabbatic leave at 100 percent of salary, upon approval by the provost and dean of the faculty, in consultation with the Tenure and Promotion Committee, of a proposal of research, study, writing, or other creative work to advance the faculty member’s professional growth and as a scholar and teacher.

Application Procedure and Deadline
Faculty members are asked to inform the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty of their leave plans by November 1. Applications for tenure-track sabbatical fellowships are made to the office by January 6.  Decisions about reappointment and fellowships are shared with candidates and department chairs in the spring.

Tenure-track faculty applying for fellowships are asked to submit their proposals by January 6.  Please use this form.

The Proposal
The proposal will be evaluated by the members of the Tenure and Promotion Committee, some of whom may not have a specialized knowledge of an applicant's area of study. The proposal should, therefore, be addressed to persons who will be interested in the project not only as an immediate contribution to learning and/or instruction in a particular field, but also as a contribution to the advancement of knowledge more generally, and to the applicant's development as a scholar and teacher.

The college particularly encourages those who seek to develop a research or creative project different in nature or significantly broader in scope than the dissertation.

The proposal should be narrative in form, and clearly focused and organized. It should cover the following matters:

  • Conception and Definition of the Project
Applicants should describe the specific program of research planned for the year, explaining the basic ideas or questions to be explored and illustrating its approach or line of thought to the extent that these have been developed. In addition, applicants should explain the relationship of the proposed project to their immediate and long-range study or research objectives. They should also explain the relationship of their projects to the work of other scholars in the same general area. Applicants proposing to revise dissertations should provide an updated bibliography or other information indicating what preliminary revision is already under way.
  • Significance of the Project
Applicants should clearly indicate the significance of the proposed work and the contribution it will make to the humanities, natural sciences, or social sciences.
  • Plan of work and Methodology
Applicants should outline the plan of work, methodology, and schedule for the year.

Report
At the end of the sabbatical, fellowship recipients are required to submit a report to the provost and dean of the faculty summarizing the results of their work. Future eligibility for fellowships is contingent on submission of this report.
