Amherst Magazine Bruce Albert Cronnell

Bruce was very proud of having attended Amherst.  He was the first person in our extended family to have attended college, and he proved to be the leader of a long line of our family attending excellent colleges.

While at Amherst, Bruce was very active in the Glee Club and the Christian Association.  He continued to be very active in various Christian associations and churches throughout his life.

After graduation from Amherst, Bruce was one of the very early people to join the Peace Corps.  He spent all of his time in Africa and kept a detailed journal of his experiences.  The journal is neatly typed and put together in manuscript form.  Almost everyone in the family has enjoyed reading it.

After the Peace Corps, he returned to Dalton for a short period.  However, settling in the rather quiet hamlet of Dalton was never part of his long-term plans.  He purchased a used 1958 Chevy, packed up his belongings and headed west to California, where he entered graduate school at UCLA, ultimately receiving a PhD in Linguistics.

After graduation, he launched at twenty year career doing linguistic research at South West Regional Laboratory in LA.   He wrote numerous journal articles, and was the keynote speaker at several conferences.  He also served as a consultant to the California School System as concerns teaching English as a second language.

He loved California, and was proud of his new home.  He sang in the Los Angeles Choir, and was very active in civic and charitable activities, as well as his church.

He believed in living life to its fullest extent.
