In Memory

Our classmate, Robert Nixon, died in Los Angeles, CA, on January 23, 2007, from complications of a stroke suffered on his sixty-seventh birthday. Bob was a friend, fraternity brother and teammate. Majoring in history, he played basketball and baseball, carried on an active social life as a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and participated in numerous campus activities. He was a gentle man with a keen sense of humor and remarkable generosity of spirit.

After graduation from Amherst, he trained in dentistry at the Univ of Pennsylvania and received his specialty training in endodontics from Temple Univ. From there he launched a remarkable career as a practicing dentist and pioneer in the field of cosmetic dentistry. He wrote the acclaimed text, The Chairside Manual for Porcelain Bonding, contributed over forty articles to leading dental publications and created the Nixon Porcelain Veneer Kit, one of the two most widely-used kits for preparing teeth and the ceramic finishing for porcelain veneer restorations, now in its third generation. His primary research and development work was in the field of porcelain veneer esthetics, and in recognition of his contributions and his skills, he performed comprehensive aesthetic restorative dentistry on more than one hundred dentists throughout his career, for which he became known as the "dentists' dentist." He was also selected by the periodical Dentistry Today as one of the top one hundred dental educators for eleven straight years (1996-2006).

Bob was an avid tennis player who played competitively throughout his life. He loved music, and, in the words of his wife Lomie, would entertain anyone who would listen by singing his favorite rock-n-roll and popular classics. A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife, Lornie; his sons, Tyier and Sandon; his daughter, Stephanie Nixon; and his stepdaughter, Nickie Antorcha, and stepson, Peter Julian, as well as his grandchildren.

Bob shared his quiet intelligence, his boundless energy and his sterling character with us all. We will miss him.
