College)\n\nABSTRACT: Kenneth Snelson's beautiful tensegrity sculptures f
eature\nmetal bars that seem to float magically in the air. In this talk
\nI'll try to convince you that a tensegrity is the physical\nmanifestatio
n of a linear dependence relation on the rows of a matrix.\n Then I'll di
scuss how the mathematics used to describe tensegrities\ncan also be used
to study other disparate problems including sensor\nnetwork localization\,
the rigidity of bar-and-joint frameworks\, and\nthe distributed control o
f formations of robots.SPEAKER BIO: Jessica\nSidman loves to work on pur
e and applied problems at the intersection\nof computational algebra\, alg
ebraic geometry\, and combinatorics. Her\nrecent work in rigidity theory c
ombines aspects of these three fields\,\nand all got started when an under
graduate doing a thesis on protein\nfolding asked her a question about pro
jective space. She got her Ph.D.\nfrom the University of Michigan and did
postdoctoral work at UC\nBerkeley and UMass Amherst. She was the Profess
or of Mathematics on\nthe John Stewart Kennedy Foundation at Mount Holyoke
College and is\nnow a Professor of Mathematics at Amherst College.\n\n4:0
