Summer Fellowships

All Summer Fellowships are now administered by the Center for Community Engagement. To learn more, please visit the Civic Engagement Scholars web page.

1. Mead/Art and the History of Art Summer Fellowship

The Mead Art Museum and the Department of Art and the History of Art invite all continuing students, including first year students, to apply for fellowships of up to $3,500 for internships in the history and/or practice of art.  Students may propose to participate in an internship program or to undertake individual study in any state or country. Applications are evaluated on the following criteria: the significance of the proposed project to the student's growth; evidence of preparation to undertake the project; and its feasibility as a summer project.

To apply for a fellowship, please complete an Amherst College Summer Internship Funding Application. In addition to the application materials described on the Center for Community Engagement website, all proposals for individual study should include a budget, and proposals for individual study in the practice of art should include digital images of three relevant artworks made by the applicant. Fellowship recipients are required to complete an internship evaluation and to make a public presentation about their summer experiences in the fall semester.

2. Arts & Communication Fellowship

The Amherst College Career Center invites all continuing students pursuing internships in the arts, communications or entertainment sectors to apply for an Arts & Communication Fellowship. These fellowships will provide small monetary awards to students interning during summer in such fields as:
•    Art, including art history museums and other arts organizations
•    Communications, such as advertising, journalism, or marketing
•    Entertainment, preferably theater, film or television

First-year students, sophomores, juniors and first-semester seniors who will enroll in classes during fall semester following the summer internship are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a confirmed internship in order to receive the funding.

Ideally, students will have a full-time, 8-10 week domestic or international internship; however, students with part-time internships will be considered. Students who are eligible for the Federal Work Study program, and whose intern employers are work study eligible, may receive federal funds.

Students interested in applying for a Fellowship should complete an Amherst College Summer Internship Funding Application. Fellowship recipients will be required to complete an internship evaluation and to write a note of appreciation to the donor who provided the funding.

3. Brooke Kamin Rapaport ’84 Fellowship in Art History

The Department of Art and the History of Art invites all continuing students interested in pursuing internships in the field of art history to apply for the Brooke Kamin Rapaport ’84 Fellowship in Art History, established in 2009 to enable undergraduates to engage meaningfully in the work of the non-profit and public service sectors without regard to a sponsoring organization’s ability to offer a paid internship. Student recipients will be selected by the faculty of the Department of Art and the History of Art.

Students interested in applying for a Fellowship should complete an Amherst College Summer Internship Funding Application. Fellowship recipients will be required to complete an internship evaluation and to write a note of appreciation to the donor who provided the funding.
