July 2–August 16, 2011
Daniels Gallery

This exhibition celebrates the recent gift of American prints from the collection of Amherst alumnus Dr. Sanford Sternlieb (Class of 1946) and Esther Sternlieb (1925–2003). The installation features forty etchings by Edward Hopper, Jack Levine, John Marin, and John Sloan.

Printmaking held particular appeal among socially and politically minded American modernists because the medium allowed for wide circulation of their imagery and, unlike expensive oil paintings and sculpture, was readily accessible to a large audience. Enduring Impressions features views of New York, intimate interiors, and Levine’s portfolio inspired by the 1931 film “Die 3-Groschenoper,” by G. W. Pabst and based on the musical play by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.
