January 8, 2010—A new year! New finials! The Mead's desk-and-bookcase, attributed to Nathaniel Gould, received historically accurate replacements for two of its three finials today. The two round finials, which previously occupied the right- and left-hand-sides of the bookcase, were swapped out for new flame finials, as the bookcase would originally have had (the end round finials were known to be inappropriate). The new finials were created by Robert Mussey Associates of Boston and were based on designs provided by the owner of a similar piece of Gould furniture. The new finials make the overall desk-and-bookcase much snappier in appearance: don’t you agree?
