February 19, 2013—In January, the Mead offered the interterm course Beyond Shopping: Acquiring Art for the Mead, taught by Mead director Lizzie Barker, in which participating students learned the ins and outs of museum acquisitions in anticipation of the annual Trinkett Clark Memorial Student Acquisition project. Following visits to the artists’ studios, the students selected suites of prints by two regional artists, Rachel Gross and Lillianna Pereira. The students then divided into two teams, each of which argued the case for one artist's work, mock court-style, before an assembled group of docents, curators, and museum supporters. A secret ballot determined the winning suite of prints: this year, a perfect tie allowed the Mead to acquire both sets!
Previous years' acquisitions from the Trinkett Clark Memorial Student Acquisition project are currently on view in the exhibition Art for All: Additions to the Collection from Antiquity to Today.
