Events & Calendars Hugh Hawkins Annual Lecture

Rebecca J. Scott, the Charles Gibson Distinguished University Professor of History and Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, will give this year's Hugh Hawkins Lecture. She will give her lecture, titled “'She Had Always Enjoyed Her Freedom': Re-Enslavement and the Law in the Era of the Haitian Revolution," on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 4:30 p.m. in Pruyne Lecture Hall (Fayerweather 115). Scott teaches seminars on the law in slavery and freedom as well as courses on civil rights and the boundaries of citizenship in historical perspective. Her lecture is based on her recent book (with Jean Hébrand) "Freedom Papers: An Atlantic Odyssey in the Age of Emancipation" (Harvard University Press, 2012). The lecture is sponsored by the Department of History at Amherst College and named in honor of Hugh Hawkins, professor emeritus of history and American studies.
