Professor Jonathan Schofer, a scholar of classical Jewish literature, ethics and comparative studies, will speak on "Classical Jewish Thought, Vulnerability, and Contemporary Ethical Issues: The Case of 'The Obesity Epidemic'” on Monday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. in Pruyne Lecture Hall (115 Fayerweather Hall). Schofer's research centers on self-cultivation and ethical instruction, and in two groundbreaking books, he has established new approaches to Jewish ethics, with attention to subjective states, fragile bodies, and power. He has published "The Making of a Sage: A Study in Rabbinic Ethics" (2005) and "Confronting Vulnerability: The Body and the Divine in Rabbinic Ethics" (2010), along with many articles. His doctorate is from The University of Chicago, and he has taught at DePaul University, The University of Wisconsin-Madison and Harvard University. He is currently a visiting associate professor of religion at Reed College in Portland, Ore. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Religion Department and the Willis D. Wood Fund.
