Events & Calendars "Musicians Wrestle Everywhere: A Concert of American Music," Conducted by Luca Antonucci '14 and Jordan Hugh Sam '14

"Musicians Wrestle Everywhere" explores the construction of American nostalgia, spirituality and identity through instrumental and choral music of the 20th century. The first half of the concert pairs two seminal works in the development of the "American Sound," Aaron Copland’s 1944 ballet "Appalachian Spring" (in the original 13-instrument version) and Samuel Barber’s "1947 Knoxville: Summer of 1915," featuring soprano soloist Mary Hubbell. Following the instrumental selections, performed by members of the Amherst Symphony, Hugh Sam and Antonucci will lead singers from the Amherst College Choral Society in works by Copland, Barber, Dominik Argento, Frank Ticheli and Elliot Carter, whose settings of American poetry from Emily Dickinson to James Agee offer a variety of perspectives on issues of spiritual, musical and national identity. The concert is free and open to the public; seating is by general admission.
