The Amherst Symphony Orchestra brings its 2013-2014 season and its exploration of second symphonies to a close with an all-Beethoven concert on Saturday evening, May 3, at 8 p.m. The concert will open with Ludwig van Beethoven's beautiful Romance in G major for violin and orchestra, followed by his vibrant Symphony #2 in D major. Beethoven's Second marks the end of the composer's "early" period and is characterized by both the buoyant, classical language of Haydn and the wild passion we associate with the mature, often tragic Beethoven.

The concert will be presented in Buckley Recital Hall of Amherst College's Arms Music Center. It will last approximately one hour and will be performed without intermission. Music honors graduate Abigail Gray '14 is the solo violinist in Beethoven's Romance, which will be conducted by music honors graduate Luca Antonucci '14. Music Director Mark Lane Swanson leads the orchestra in Beethoven's Second.
