Events & Calendars "Photographing Deep Time," Artist Conversation with Jonathon Keats '94

What will Amherst College look like in the year 3015? How will the Pioneer Valley landscape transform over the next millennium? Situated at the top of Stearns Steeple, the Millennium Camera will survey 1,000 years of change in a single continuous exposure, revealing the evolution of our school and our impact on the surrounding environment through the lens of deep time.

The accompanying exhibition at the Mead Art Museum will contextualize this new project by conceptual artist Jonathon Keats, showing his previous experiments in deep-time photography, including his collaboration with the people of Berlin in a 100-year photographic survey of their changing city.

Like the cameras in his Berlin project, the Millennium Camera is directed at the present even more than the future. "Seeing the finished image isn't as important as the awareness of gradual observation," says Keats. "Deep-time photography can provide a sense of connection with future generations that we'll never meet, but will be impacted by everything we do in our own lifetime."
