Baring Arms, Not Bearing Arms: Sea Nymphs and the Absent Arms of Achilles on Marine Sarcophagi

April 7, 2017 - 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm (already occurred)
Mead Art Museum, William Green Study Room

Mont Allen (Asst. Prof., Southern Illinois University at Carbondale) will give a talk this Friday at 4 p.m. in the William Green Study Room, Mead Art Museum, entitled "Baring Arms, Not Bearing Arms: Sea Nymphs and the Absent Arms of Achilles on Marine Sarcophagi." This talk will examine the astonishing and idiosyncratic Marine Sarcophagus acquired by the Mead a few years back. His close-up examination of this sarcophagus, which was used for the entombment of two children, explores the disappearance of mythological narrative in Roman funerary art.
