Founded in 1887 as the first all-graduate school in the country, Clark University boasts a long tradition of innovative ideas and unconventional thinking. By coming to Clark, graduate students follow in the footsteps of some of the most influential and creative thinkers of the past 125 years.

Clark has played a prominent role in the development of several academic disciplines, including psychology, geography and interdisciplinary studies. It was a Clark physics professor, Albert Michelson, who was the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences, and a Clark biology professor, Gregory Pincus, whose research led to the development of the birth control pill.

Highly specialized programs focused on Holocaust and genocide studies, geographic information systems and other nonstandard areas reflect Clark's pioneering academic culture. Clark was among the first universities to fully integrate master's-level management studies with in-depth programs on community development, international development and sustainability.
