Timothy Zhu of Penn State University will discuss "From Managing the Cloud to the Cloud Managing You."

Abstract: Cloud providers invest billions of dollars each year in building cloud infrastructures. How then should we effectively manage all these resources to optimize cost, performance, reliability, etc? What can the user do to manage the cloud? What can the provider do to manage your application? In this talk, we’ll explore various research problems in cloud computing resource management and new research opportunities at PennState in my research group for those considering grad school. I’ll also discuss my grad school experiences and provide advice on applying to grad school.

Bio: Timothy Zhu is an assistant professor in computer science and engineering at PennState. He received both his B.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, where his research was in the broad area of resource management in clouds. He will continue this work at PennState by building a research group focused on this area. Prior to starting his Ph.D., Timothy worked on graphics device driver development at NVIDIA, a visual computing technology company. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program fellowship and a EuroSys best student paper award for TetriSched.
