Race and racism are not new. Yet many of us are now recognizing the importance of and developing the tools to think and talk about race in our lives at home and at work.

The goal of this introductory workshop intended for faculty and staff is to understand what race and racism are and why they matter. Participants will focus on increasing their knowledge about race and racism, from reviewing the historical construction of racial identity in the U.S. to understanding key terms and common misunderstandings around race, such as anti-Blackness, belonging, and color-blindness.

Upon participating in this workshop, participants will:

- Know how to define and describe race and racism

- Understand some of the ways race and racism show up in education

- Be able to articulate why race and racism matter within their spheres of influence
