Beesy Strategy: Behavioral Science Consulting Info Session

Beesy is an insights-based professional services company, purpose-built to leverage deep, applied behavioral science expertise from academia, as well as best-in-industry marketing and insight acumen, to deliver greater commercial impact.

Registration Open for LACOL Online Non-credit Data Science Course

Based on a successful first run of the Data Science class last summer, the Liberal Arts Collaborative for Digital Innovation (LACOL) Faculty and Administrative Advisory Councils unanimously and enthusiastically approved the course to run again in summer 2020. Notably, the summer 2020 online course opportunity is open to Amherst College students as a not for credit option. The class will take place from June 10 – August 7. There is no charge or tuition for this summer’s course.
This fully online class is designed primarily for students with no prior coding experience who have taken or are taking a first calculus course. Interested students should not have previously taken an introductory data science course (e.g., STAT231, ASTR 200). Students should ensure that have sufficient time available during the summer to complete course assignments. For more information please see https://lacol.net/critical-ds/.
To sign up please send Nicholas Horton (nhorton@amherst.edu) an application (as a single pdf) that includes a 1) statement for why you would like to take the class, 2) a brief summary of your background and interests, 3) list of prior courses taken at Amherst, 4) a commitment to complete the coursework if you were admitted, 5) and the names of two faculty references who could speak to your ability to undertake independent work. Professional Norms in the Workplace

How are we ‘supposed’ to conduct ourselves at work? What’s it like to have a professional relationship with a supervisor? How can we communicate respectfully while still expressing ourselves? How might we get to know a company’s culture? How might we ask for advice at work?
During this one-hour workshop, learn about expectations, best practices and strategies for understanding expected professional behaviors and etiquette in the workplace. Every organization has its own culture, leadership, mission and identity: we’ll cover the constants, the variables and the possibilities in different environments.

5-College Program in Culture, Health and Science

Come learn more about the 5-College Program in Culture, Health and Science (CHS)! CHS is a certificate program (analogous to a minor) that allows students to explore human health, disease and healing from interdisciplinary perspectives. It links understandings of history, culture, and behavior with clinical, biological and epidemiological models of health and disease. Students design a plan of study that approaches “health” holistically from the perspective of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. As aspiring teachers and academic leaders, we should never forget that strong, successful teaching and leadership happens when we keep humanity at the center of the conversation. Join Cyndy to learn about leadership, the value of finding wise and supportive mentors, and the nature of education in modern schools.

Cyndy Jean ‘07 is in her fifth year as the Director of the Middle School at Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY. She began her career at Hackley thirteen years ago as an assistant teacher in second grade. She then taught in the English Department and has coached field hockey throughout her tenure. Cyndy holds a master’s degree in Private School Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University and a second master’s degree in Teaching and Special Education in Grades 1-6 from Fordham University. She is currently a Fellow in the National Association of Independent Schools’ Aspiring Heads Program, serves on the Fairchester Alliance for hiring and retaining faculty of color, and sits on the Board of Trustees for the Tree of Life Orphanage, a non-profit organization serving and educating over 200 children in Source Matelas, Haiti.

Alumni-in-Residence: The Value of Courageous Conversations for People/Women of Color in their Work, Lunch with Cyndy Jean ’07

Now in her thirteenth year as an educator in independent schools, and her fifth year as a senior administrator, Cyndy has learned to develop a series of strategies for personal and professional growth, as well as how to develop a strategic plan that helps her to connect with school leadership and train faculty. Over a catered lunch, she will share how she has learned to navigate the courageous conversations needed for growth and success in the workplace. Please register through Handshake to join us.

Birth Doula Workshop

Siobhan Marks and I have been working to organize a doula training workshop with Warm Welcome Birth Services. Doulas provide non-medical support to laboring people. The training will be on campus March 7, 8, 28, and 29 and four-day attendance is required in order to be eligible for certification. This training is taught by a certified professional midwife, and ends with a hands-on module with pregnant families. Sign up ASAP if you are interested. Currently, funding for the training is pending, but likely. If you need more information, please contact me or Siobhan.
