Writing for TV: Alumni Panel (featuring Sarah Walker '03, Jenna Lamia '98 and Leila Cohan Miccio, Smith College '05)

Join us for a mini-master class on pursuing television writing as a career. In this session, Amherst and Smith alumni will walk students through the step-by-step details of entry-level experiences, cultivating your unique voice, and understanding the entertainment industry.

This event is open to all but aims to specifically reach groups who are underrepresented in the industry-- women/trans/non-binary students, LGBTQ+ students, BIPOC students, FLI students, and students with disabilities.

The Business and Finance Program was established in 2015 to help students explore and prepare for careers in the financial services industry, consulting, or general business. We also offer programming in support of those considering starting their own companies, investing in/working at start-ups, or just gaining an innovative mindset.

The information session will be led by Stephanie Hockman, the Program Director, and include insights from Rob Parker ’21 (Finance intern) and Emily Kiernan ’21 (Consulting intern). During the session, you’ll hear a quick overview of finance and consulting, the programs offered to explore and prepare for careers in finance, business, and consulting, including workshops, experiential learning opportunities, and how best to take advantage of student interns and advising appointments included in the Business and Finance Program.

The fields of science and technology and associated areas of engineering and mathematics offer opportunities in both the "classic" STEM areas, as well as new paths that are expanding daily as new discoveries are made.

Come join Dr. Carolyn Margolin, Director of the Loeb Center's Careers In Science and Technology Program, as she discusses the range of opportunities in the STEM fields and how Amherst students can best prepare for them. Regardless of experience level, attendees will leave this session with an understanding of:

Students take tutorials with expert “tutors,” faculty and final year PhD students, and strengthen their research, writing, and oral argument skills.  In addition to this unique and challenging academic environment, students have the opportunity to live alongside local students and participate fully in college life. This session will teach you the ways you can apply for study to Oxford or Cambridge, e.g., direct enrollment, through a provider, and you will also learn what special arrangements we have, i.e., New College at Oxford. Alumni-in-Residence: Creating a Through Line When Life Is Non-Linear, with Inda Schaenen '83 P'15

If you’re even a little bit confused and anxious about life right now, and wondering what your liberal arts degree will prepare you for, please join this presentation on adaptive creativity. Students in all disciplines, particularly those interested in promoting radical systemic change through joyful everyday work, are encouraged to attend. There will be plenty of time for conversation and questions.

Inda Schaenen '83 P'15, MEd, MFA, PhD, is a writer, journalist, professor, and certified English language arts teacher in St. Louis, Missouri. She’s the author of Speaking of Fourth Grade: What Listening to Kids Tells Us About School in America, four young adult novels, and The 7 O’Clock Bedtime, a parenting guide.

Raised in New York City and a St. Louis resident since 1991, Inda has taught in public, private, urban, and suburban schools, from second grade to graduate school. In 2013, Inda began serving in Normandy, the unaccredited school district that graduated Michael Brown, who was killed by a police officer on August 9, 2014. In response to the educational chaos and incoherence that preceded and followed that moment, Inda founded Project Lab St. Louis, an education nonprofit based in her middle school classroom in Normandy.

Over the last five years, Project Lab St. Louis has engaged hundreds of students from different St. Louis communities in projects in the humanities, including Normandy Crosscurrents, a program of cross-community dialogue, Living Questions, a year-long curriculum of philosophical inquiry, and From Deer to Venison, an exploration of meat-eating and culinary arts. Project Lab St. Louis was recently recognized for inclusion and equity by FOCUS St. Louis in their 2019 “What’s Right with the Region” awards, and that same year, Inda received the Courageous Educator Award from St. Louis’ Educators for Social Justice.

An avid swimmer and pickleball player, Inda is married to Michael Dee (Amherst ’80), a classroom teacher since 1981. They have three children and recently welcomed their first grandchild. Inda plans to present from 8 to 8:30 pm, then take audience questions until 9:00 pm (while staying online until 9:15 to answer any individual student questions).

Putnam Series - Math & Statistics - Combinatorics

The Putnam Competition is a national mathematics exam for undergraduate students. It is both a challenging and fun exam, in which you will practice your problem-solving and proof-writing skills. Most of the problems require basic calculus and algebra knowledge, so first-year students are encouraged to participate.

Putnam sessions are an informal and friendly chance to meet other students and talk about problem solving. Typically we will share some problems in advance to think about, have a focused discussion at the beginning of the session and then discuss some of the problems together and have students present solutions. The meetings will be on Zoom. If you are interested, please contact Prof. Ivan Contreras (times subject to change).

Loeb.NYC Entrepreneurial Internship Information Session

Startup studio Loeb.NYC is continuing its commitment to entrepreneurial internships in NYC. Michael Loeb ’77, P’21 (serial entrepreneur, founder of Loeb Enterprises/Loeb.NYC, and co-founder of Priceline), along with his business partner Rich Vogel, have collaborated to bring you the Loeb.NYC Summer Internship Program for the fourth year in a row.

Loeb.NYC's 10-week internship program provides training and first-hand NYC startup experience to approximately forty bright undergraduate students with an enthusiasm for business and innovation. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to learn about entrepreneurship and make a difference at a startup. Attend this information session to learn more about the internship program and how to successfully apply to be part of the Summer 2021 cohort!

The internship kicks off in early June, when interns join Michael and Rich at Michael’s Southampton house (if you’ve seen Billions on Showtime, it’s that Hampton house), where they are immersed in a one-day training program. The next day, the CEOs of the startup companies selected for the summer program pitch their businesses and summer projects to the interns. After individual meetings between the startups and the students, each intern is matched with a company that closely fits their skills and interests. To ensure this program is a success for interns and companies, company CEOs create defined assignments with meaningful work and oversight.

The internship program is supportive and comprehensive. Each intern receives a subject matter introduction to business and entrepreneurship, obtains support throughout the 10-weeks, and is provided with resources enabling them to succeed. Every week, interns visit the Loeb.NYC home office for our version of an evening 'Ted Talk' featuring world class entrepreneurs discussing, well, just about anything they want to. In addition, interns participate in a weekly roundtable where progress is reviewed and concerns discussed.

Alumni-in-Residence: Using Adversity, Mentorship, and a Liberal Arts Education to Empower Yourself and Others, with Sean Legister '11

Want to hear an alum's perspective on what it's actually like to be a person of color in finance? Interested in learning how adversity, mentorship, and a liberal arts education can help you to empower yourself and others around you?

Sean Legister ’11 learned early in his career, as one of few Black people at one of the largest investment banks, that adversity only defines him if he lets it. He struggled with registration exams early in his career, which led him to ask questions like, “Why? Am I dumb? Did I not work hard enough?”

After this initial setback, he found that many people judged his aptitude. However, Sean is not only still working at Goldman Sachs, but is thriving in his career and serving as a leader within the organization. He credits his career success partly to his resiliency and partly to great mentorship relationships with a few Amherst alums that have spanned almost a decade.

From his first internship after his junior year to now, Sean has demonstrated fortitude, a positive outlook, and a relentless desire to empower others. Attend this session to hear more about his journey and the advice he has for current Amherst students.

SEAN'S FULL BIO:
Sean Legister ‘11 is currently an Alternative Product Specialist in Goldman Sachs’ Merchant Bank. He has been with the firm since receiving his bachelor’s in both Black Studies and English from Amherst College in 2011. Prior to his current role, he was an equity sales trader on MAPS, a cross-asset team, since its 2014 inception. He started his career at GS as a sales trader in equity based financial instruments, listed derivatives, swaps, and international equities as part of the Global Institutional team.

Sean serves on the Board of Trustees of the Cristo Rey New York High School, where he mentors current students and alums. He is the founder and curator of the Monday Morning Lift (MML) and Breakfast Bites. The MML is an e-mail subscription service that aims to inspire, challenge, and motivate readers of all ages. Breakfast Bites is an initiative he created at Goldman Sachs to help Black professionals gain exposure within the firm, as well as build the culture within the Black community. Both of his parents were born and raised in Jamaica.

Science and Service with Kyle Alvarado — Co-hosted by Amherst Effective Altruism & the Loeb Center's Careers in Science and Technology Program

Join Amherst Effective Altruism and the Loeb Center's Careers in Science and Technology Program as they host Kyle Alvarado, a mechanical engineering student that is using his skills and knowledge to increase food production and combat hunger.

Kyle Alvarado received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and is now a graduate student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Before joining the Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED) in 2019, Kyle was a research associate at the University, where he focused on improving technology-based Arctic-domain awareness for search and rescue. At ALLFED, Kyle researches alternative food production methods for earth during an agricultural disaster.

Having received NASA’s Alaska Space Grant, his current projects involve feeding people on earth and in space with electroactive bacteria and chemically synthesized sugar. Kyle also enjoys volunteering at his family’s youth football organization in Anchorage.

Diversity Career Day Panel: Bringing Your Whole Self to Work — Amherst and Williams Alumni Share Experiences and Advice

Amherst and Williams Colleges have partnered to present our inaugural Diversity Career Day on Wednesday, October 21. Following the virtual afternoon meetup between employers and students, please join us for this alumni panel discussion on the topic of "Bringing Your Whole Self to Work."

In this discussion, student moderators Jeremy Thomas (Amherst ‘21) and Essence Perry (Williams '22) will invite alums from both schools to share experiences from their own career paths, as well as advice for current students. This event is open to all, but primarily targeted towards current students who are navigating the job search, hiring process, and entry into the workplace as diverse candidates and hires.

Our panelists' and moderators' bios are as follows:

PRINCESS ADEDOYIN (Amherst '19) is an Associate Consultant at Bain & Company and has been working in the firm’s Boston office, though now remotely, for over a year. At Bain, she serves as Diversity Lead for the Amherst recruiting team and the Volunteer Engagement Officer for its social impact consulting group, Inspire. This summer, Princess led a virtual, six-week Consulting “Summer Camp” for Black women at Amherst College, meeting weekly to prepare for the upcoming recruiting season and going through resumes, cover letters, case prep and how to obtain an offer. During her time at Amherst College, Princess was involved in a number of activities: she co-ran the popular AC After Dark Program, was heavily involved in the African and Caribbean Students Union (ACSU) as Senior Chair, was a Resident Counselor, worked as a Questbridge Telementor for 4 years, and also ran and founded her own hair braiding business to service the Black community in the Pioneer Valley.

VALERIA CUETO (Williams '09) is a first-generation American from Miami, Florida. She is the eldest daughter of Cuban and Nicaraguan immigrants and a first-generation college graduate from her alma mater, Williams College. Cueto is the Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) at Illinois College (IC). She also holds membership in Culturally Integrated Education for Latinos Organization (CIELO), Springfield Dominican Anti-Racism Team (SDART), and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School Board, and she is treasurer of the Springfield Advocacy Network (SIAN). In these positions, she has organized rallies in downtown Springfield against the inhuman treatment of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. Cueto is committed to journeying with immigrant communities and fighting against systemic racism. Cueto advocates for local immigrant families; has written and delivered speeches; published op-eds in the SJR; and appeared on the local radio and television for immigrant advocacy. She lives in Springfield, Illinois, with her husband and two daughters.

ASHLEY J. FINIGAN (Amherst ’08) is an upper school History and American Studies teacher at the Berkeley Carroll School. In addition to teaching, Ashley is also a doctoral candidate in History at the University of Chicago, where she is currently at work on her dissertation – an organizational history of the National Council of Negro Women. While at Amherst, she double majored in Black Studies and History, worked as a Resident Counselor, served as a telementor, was a member of the Black Students Union and sang with the gospel choir. Building on her experiences in the Reading, Writing, Teaching program and Inside-Out Prison exchange, Ashley chose to pursue a career in education, and after graduation returned home to New York City to work as a high school global history teacher through the Teach for America program. She then moved on to earn an M.A in African American Studies from Columbia University and eventually relocated to Chicago to pursue further graduate study. While at Chicago, Ashley led summer arts education programs housed at the Smart Museum of Art, in partnership with the Chicago Housing Authority, and served as a mentor with the Minds Matter program. In her current position at the Berkeley Carroll School, Ashley has developed courses in African American and Caribbean history and served as a faculty advisor to the school’s A Capella Club and the Girls II Women student group. Through all her work, Ashley has come to think of herself as a knowledge producer and seeks to apply her skills as a historian to multiple venues as an educator.

LANDON MARCHANT (Williams ‘20) is a Global Manager at ZX Ventures (Anheuser-Busch InBev’s global innovation and investment group). They are currently working on operations and global strategy rollout for an early-stage e-commerce startup launching in eleven countries across three continents. Landon is also a disabled USAF veteran, former skilled trades apprentice, community college student, and graduate of Williams College. At Williams, they majored in Philosophy and Sociology with a concentration in Science and Technology Studies. Their advocacy work ranges from direct mentorship and resource-sharing to public speaking, writing, and research. Landon is a founding member of the active-duty transgender military group SPART*A, a Point Foundation alum (2017—2020), and has performed extensive graduate-level research examining the individual experiences and collective standpoint of transgender military service members and veterans.

ESSENCE PERRY (Williams '22) is an Economics and Philosophy major from Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Throughout her time at Williams, she has taken classes related to public policy, the relationship between capitalism and the state, and creating a more equitable future for marginalized communities. On campus, she is the Co-President of College Democrats, an organization dedicated to fostering political engagement on campus, as well as a member of the newly-formed student government, helping provide students more equitable access to funding and college governance. Generating change and creating positive social impact is something that is incredibly meaningful to her, and it guides many of the activities she does on campus and hopefully after Williams.

JEREMY THOMAS (Amherst ‘21) is a senior at Amherst College from Houston, Texas, where he graduated from William P. Clements high school. At Amherst, Jeremy is a double English and Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought major. He is currently Student-Body President and Student-Director of the Office of Student, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Previously, he has been Captain of the Mock Trial Association and President of the Black Student Union. During his summers, Jeremy has worked as an investigative intern with Georgetown Law Center’s Prettyman Clinics, as an Elizabeth Ruyter Fellow with the Southern Center for Human Rights, and as a summer fellow with Reprieve. After graduation, Jeremy plans to attend law school to pursue a career in public interest law.

Alumni-in-Residence

Alumni-in-Residence: A Career in International Affairs, with Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins ’82

Bonnie Jenkins ‘82 began her career as a Legal Intern at the NYC Corporation Counsel and is currently the Founder and Executive Director of the Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict Transformation (WCAPS). Join her as she shares about her exceptional career path, including roles with the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Naval Reserves, the Ford Foundation, and the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks (9/11 Commission).

Bonnie will also discuss graduate school pathways for a career in international relations, including reflections on her own advanced academic pursuits in policy and law. This conversation will be beneficial for students curious about careers in international relations, security and conflict issues, government, public policy or law.

Bonnie’s full bio:
Bonnie Jenkins is the Founder and Executive Director of Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict Transformation and a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. She is Chair of the Committee on Radioactive Sources: Applications and Alternative Technologies of the National Academies of Sciences. She is an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington Elliott School of International Affairs. She is also a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and School of Veterinary Science.

She was an Ambassador at the U.S. Department of State where she served as Coordinator for Threat Reduction Programs in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. Jenkins was also the DOS lead to the Nuclear Security Summits and was also a leading U.S. official in the launch and implementation of the Global Health Security Agenda. She was the 2016 DOS International Security and Nonproliferation Bureau's nominee for the Secretary's Award for Excellence in International Security Affairs. Jenkins was the Program Officer for U.S. Foreign and Security Policy at the Ford Foundation and Counsel at the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (9/11 Commission). She was an Attorney-Advisor at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and is also a retired Naval Reserves Officer.

Jenkins has a Ph.D. in International and Comparative Policy, an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law, an MPA in Public Policy, a J.D. and a B.A. from Amherst College. She was also a fellow at the Belfer Center at John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University.
