Amherst College’s Bicentennial will celebrate the contributions the College has made to our students’ lives, to higher education, and to the world. It will allow us to reflect upon the institution’s extraordinary enduring qualities, the important ways we have changed, and new directions we may pursue over the next 100 years.

As we embark on the planning stage of this historic celebration, we invite College-affiliated offices, departments, groups, and individuals to submit suggestions for Bicentennial projects or events that not only commemorate the College's rich and diverse history, but also look ahead to where the College (and the world) could be headed. A Bicentennial Advisory Committee (BAC) of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees will review the proposals and recommend a slate to be designated “official” Bicentennial programs and events, with final approval by the Bicentennial Steering Committee and President Martin. All proposals should be sent to 200years@amherst.edu. For scheduling purposes, we request that all proposals be submitted by February 3, 2020

Please do your best to respond as completely as possible to the following seven questions, and feel free to submit additional information that will help to present as comprehensive a description of your idea as possible to the BAC. If you would like guidance or would like to talk through a potential project idea, please reach out to Rebecca Kennedy, Sandy Genelius, or Bett Schumacher.

Provide a brief overview of your project idea. What is it? What will it accomplish? Why do you think it would be a good addition to Amherst’s Bicentennial celebration? (Feel free to include attachments at the bottom of the form.)
What is the goal of your Bicentennial project? What are some likely outcomes if the project is successful?
Who is/are the target audience(s) of this project—e.g., students, faculty, staff, alumni, local community, other?
Note: If you have questions about how to estimate a budget, please contact Austin Huot at CASE (ahuot@amherst.edu or 413-542-7666).
Note: There will be some College funding available for Bicentennial-related projects, but it will be limited.
What are the proposed dates for this project? Is there a firm publication or event date or a time by which it must take place (e.g., tied to an existing event or project)? How long do you think it will take to plan and prepare for the project?
Are there groups or individuals on campus with whom you might partner on the project?
Please include any files that will help better explain the scope of your proposed project.
