Dear Amherst Students, Staff, and Faculty,

Late last night we received a positive COVID-19 test result for a staff member. The individual is in isolation and is currently asymptomatic and feeling well. Contact tracing has identified three close contacts, who will need to quarantine for 10 days, per the new Massachusetts guidance on length of quarantine period, while continuing to be tested.

The new quarantine guidance issued this week for those identified as close contacts has been adopted by the College. Now, the length of quarantine will be 10 days (reduced from the previous 14 days), provided the close contact:

  • has no symptoms,

  • tests negative at day eight or later (using a molecular diagnostic test, which is the test the College uses), and

  • continues to monitor for symptoms for 14 days.

A reminder for students: if you have not received your results before you had planned to leave campus, you may consider delaying your departure if feasible. If not, we encourage you to take every possible precaution during your travel. If you have not received your results when you reach your destination, you are urged to self-quarantine until you receive them.

Given the continued large number of cases across the country, we also urge you to continue to strictly adhere to the College’s health and safety rules to try to minimize any further spread of the virus. We ask you to:

Thank you for your continued diligence.
