Faculty and staff returning to campus must follow safety precautions regarding health screenings, workspace procedures, and more. The College will support you and provide the resources you need.

Until further notice, members of our community who
have been working remotely should continue to do so unless a change is initiated by their supervisor or department chair.

To return to campus, faculty must obtain permission from the Provost/Dean of the Faculty or their department chair, and staff must obtain permission from their supervisors or division heads.

Required COVID-19 Testing

Faculty and staff working on campus will be required to complete COVID-19 testing at a frequency determined by the College. The College will provide the testing materials, collection and analysis of the tests. The College has contracted with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard for testing analysis.

Positive COVID-19 Tests

Faculty, staff, service providers or contractors who have been on campus and have tested positive for COVID-19 must immediately contact their primary health care provider and inform their supervisor or department head that they are ill and will be out of work. (Note: you are not required or expected to share your specific diagnosis.) Faculty, staff, service providers, and contractors must contact Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety John Carter ( to share that they have tested positive. This information will be used to facilitate the College’s contact tracing efforts in accordance with guidelines from public health authorities. Any exposures in the workplace are additionally subject to contact tracing and notification to the Town of Amherst Board of Health. Amherst College will also clean and disinfect all impacted areas. For safety reasons, and in accordance with applicable guidance from public health authorities, persons who test positive for COVID-19 may not come to campus until permission is given by the College, and the College may require that the employee seek additional testing or provide other documentation.

Massachusetts Requirements

The College is adhering to state and local guidelines to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission on campus.

On May 18, 2020, Governor Baker announced his four-phase reopening plan for Massachusetts, which includes a specific section for higher education. The four key principles of that section are to: 

  1. protect the health and safety of our faculty, staff, students and our community;
  2. enable students to make meaningful progress towards education goals;
  3. contribute to research and innovation; and
  4. minimize adverse economic impact on families, employees and the Massachusetts economy.

Amherst College, like other institutions of higher education, has been given some latitude for each phase of the plan, provided we establish and maintain the health and safety guidelines and monitor the protocols included in the plan, and make the necessary modifications when a need arises. These safety precautions apply to all aspects of campus work and life, and are designed to reflect our collective responsibility to take steps as advised by public health authorities to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on campus.

Workplace Safety Precautions

Faculty and staff returning to work are expected to follow the safety precautions outlined on this website. Department heads and supervisors are responsible for coordinating resources for their departments and staff. The College is obligated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to follow required mandatory safety standards. Failure to meet these requirements could result in enforcement actions by the Amherst Board of Health and the Massachusetts Departments of Public Health and Labor Standards. In any case where there is a variance between guidance from the Commonwealth and safety precautions established by the College, the College’s safety precautions will take precedence.

All faculty and staff with permission to return to work on campus must complete this online training.

On-Campus Work

Essential personnel already on campus must comply with the precautions outlined on this website and be prepared to adapt existing precautions or adopt new ones if the situation changes. 

As our knowledge and understanding of COVID-19 continues to evolve, we will continue to make decisions about our campus and community. Those decisions and any changes to existing policies and plans or establishment of new policies and plans will be communicated to the community. This website will also be updated as appropriate.

Remote Work

Those who are able to fulfill their work responsibilities remotely should continue to do so to minimize the number of people on campus and reduce the potential for the spread of the virus. COVID-19 Tests & Other Requirements

To come to campus, faculty and staff must obtain approval and meet several requirements, including getting a COVID-19 test and receiving a negative test result.

Required Health Survey & Training

Faculty and staff working on campus must complete the Health Status Survey every day before coming to work, and must complete the online training at least once per semester.
