Resources During Period of Remote Learning

March 25, 2020

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, and Good Evening (depending on where you are in the world right now)!

I know it has been a few days since I have written. I hope that the first days of the remote learning experience has been as smooth as possible and that you've been taking care of yourselves. New information is less frequent now but I will continue to send updates and share resource information twice a week moving forward. Please continue to reach out to members of the faculty, staff, and your peers as we work together to remain connected. Below I have provided links to campus resources - the library, the writing center, the Loeb Center, the Center for Community Engagement, and the Counseling Center.

Message About Commencement and Reunion

March 23, 2020

To Students, Families, Faculty, Staff, and Alumni,

Earlier today I sent this note to our seniors. It will come as no surprise to many of you that we have postponed Commencement until a time when we can safely have the Class of ’20 on campus for an in-person ceremony. We are soliciting ideas from our seniors for how to celebrate their class and time here at Amherst.

Message About Commencement

March 23, 2020

Dear Seniors,

I write to let you know that we have decided very reluctantly that an in-person Commencement ceremony will have to be postponed. We all regret the delay, made necessary by the destructive pandemic affecting people across the globe.

Checking In

March 22, 2020

Dear Students,

I am writing to those of you who remain on campus to say hello and extend my best wishes as you head toward the start of classes tomorrow. I hope you’ve had ample time to enjoy the sun this weekend. I walked around campus yesterday, hoping to see some of you, but, alas, there was almost no one to be seen. I learned afterward that some of you were in one area I didn’t think to go—on the courts at the Greenways!

Campus Happenings and Academic Resources

March 20, 2020

Good morning students,

The campus is busy this morning as the students who are remaining on campus are moving into one of the 3Ms - Moore, Morrow, or Morris Pratt. Our campus operations team is moving boxes and belongings to help everyone get settled.

Thank You and You Are Already Missed

March 18, 2020

Good morning all,

It is hard to imagine what the next couple of months will be like for all of us as we move into uncharted waters. We are all learning to do things differently and with new tools and there will likely be plenty of bumps in the road.

Important Message from the Provost and Dean of the Faculty about Academic Matters

March 17, 2020

Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff,

As you can imagine, numerous questions surrounding academic matters have arisen in recent days, as the college takes steps to address the COVID-19 situation. Many of the issues that have come to the fore have required Amherst to make decisions about extending academic deadlines and thinking further about ways to be flexible. Whenever possible, the college has erred in that direction. I am including in this note some of the information that everyone needs to know as we plan for the remainder of the semester.

Social Distancing and Restricted Access

March 17, 2020

Good morning students,

If you are currently still on campus, I have two important reminders.

First, it is imperative that you practice social distancing, especially in places like Valentine Hall. The dining hall has been set up with fewer tables and chairs in order to assist you all in order to maintain appropriate distance from one another in spaces with higher densities of people. The CDC defines social distancing as: Social distancing means remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible.

Resources & Room and Board Reimbursements

March 15, 2020

Dear Students,

As you read earlier in President Martin's email, the college is moving to a remote work model. Please know that resources continue to be available to you although they will undoubtedly look different. Whether you are leaving campus or one of the few remaining on campus, we will provide more specific information about how to access different resources in the coming days. That said, staff continue to be present and available for your health, wellbeing, and safety. Please continue to reach out for support for yourself and your peers as it is needed.

Important Announcement: Implementing Remote Work Model

March 15, 2020

Dear students, faculty, and staff,

I write with an important announcement. First, let me extend my best wishes to each and every one of you and my hope that you remain well. I also want to thank you for all the patience, hard work, and spirit of collaboration you are exhibiting. Your generosity will go a long way in helping us get through this pandemic.

Clarification on Two Issues

March 14, 2020

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

You will receive several emails from the College today and tomorrow about COVID-19.  This particular note is focused on concerns about two sets of issues on the part of some alumni that have come to my attention. I want to make sure at every point that everyone in the community has clear and accurate information.

Travel assistance available

March 14, 2020

Good morning all,

There will be a few updates today.

I wanted to remind you all that travel assistance is available if you still need it.

We understand that traveling home on such short notice poses a significant financial and logistical burden.
