This year to close out Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Peer Advocates have created Lights On for SAAMherst, a 24-hour Instagram story campaign. Starting at 7 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, April 30, until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1, our goal is to “light up” Instagram by having members of our community post a photo or video of a lit candle to their Instagram story.

The purpose of the candles is to show our support for survivors and represent how we are “shining a light” on the topic of SAAM and issues of sexual violence. In lighting up Instagram and seeing candles on each others’ stories, we hope to create a warm, supportive space and sense of community. By having our #LightOn for each other, we are showing our love, support, and care for one another and reminding ourselves that we are not alone!

Here’s how you can participate!
- Any time after 7 p.m. (EST) on April 30 until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1, post a photo or video of a lit candle to your Instagram story with the #LightsOnforSAAMherst.
- You can leave it at that, write anything else you want to add or answer the prompt: "My light is on for/because…"
- If you tag the PAs (@amherst_pa), we will add your post anonymously (with your name blacked out) to a collection of candles from everyone who tags us on our own story!

We hope you will join us in lighting up Instagram for survivors and each other for Lights On for SAAMherst! We can’t wait to see all of your posts and candles bringing warmth, light and hope to our community!
