The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and subsequent disparities in health outcomes have put into stark relief which lives may be judged more or less valuable. Firm in the belief that the spread of SARS-CoV-2 is exacerbated by the unequal distribution of social vulnerability, this Virtual Salon, hosted by the Center for Humanistic Inquiry, will highlight the ways that American studies scholars provide responses to how different segments of our society are disproportionately impacted by this emerging pandemic. Our panelists will offer their own responses to the current pandemic’s impacts on particular communities given their areas of specialization. They will also engage in a dialogue concerning issues such as the rise in anti-Asian violence, how Indigenous nations are suffering the highest rates of infection, and the role of religion and religious communities, as well as effects on immigrant and black workers. Other topics may include colonial contagion and connections to other epidemics like HIV/AIDS, in relation to intersectional and black feminist analysis.

Kiara Vigil is an assistant professor of American studies and the author of Indigenous Intellectuals: Sovereignty, Citizenship, and the American Imagination (Cambridge University Press, 2015). (Moderator)

Jallicia Jolly is a predoctoral fellow in American studies and black studies at Amherst College. (Panelist)

Lloyd Barba is an assistant professor in the Department of Religion. (Panelist)

Lili Kim is a CHI Fellow and visiting faculty in the history department. (Panelist)

Sony Coráñez Bolton is an assistant professor in the Spanish department and Latinx and Latin American studies. (Panelist)
