In this workshop, Chloe B. McKenzie '14 will introduce her conceptualization of money, value, wealth, and worth to participants. Chloe has spent her career refining her understanding of these concepts, understanding that our relationships with money are complicated and textured. As such, when starting a new venture, it is critical for founders to explore how their relationships with money might show up in their development of a business.

Chloe McKenzie’s work stands at the intersection of education, finance, social justice, and the visual and performing arts. She has become a leader in wealth justice and financial education, namely through her organization BlackFem, a nonprofit whose mission is to transform school-based learning so that Black girls and girls of color have the skills, habits, and resources to build and sustain wealth.

Chloe came from an affluent household in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Her story is one of expensive schools, skipping grades, Wall Street opportunities, bonuses, and benefits. Her story is also a story of childhood abuse, burnout, and illness. As a financial trauma researcher, her companies BlackFem and Equiddie, her Amazon bestselling book, entitled The Activist Investor, and most recently, her research on financial trauma and shame showcase her epiphanies about how to close the wealth gap and build healthier relationships with money.

Chloe holds a B.A. from Amherst College in Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, as well as a graduate certificate in Financial Planning and Services from Boston University. She obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and is a certified teacher with graduate certificates in General Education and Special Education. She also holds certifications in investment advising and financial advising and has been trained in financial therapy.

Chloe’s research about financial trauma, abuse, and shame has been referenced by major academic and financial institutions. At the conclusion of the formal presentation, Chloe has allotted time for Q&A and additional student discussion -- so feel free to come with questions!
