Philosophers have often assumed that racist oppression and sexist oppression can be theorized analogously. The late critical philosopher of race Charles Mills drew inspiration from feminist philosophers working in the 1970s and 1980s to develop a theory of racial exploitation modeled on their theories of gender-based exploitation. In this talk, CHI Fellow Rose Lenehan '11 offers a critical assessment of Mills' work, arguing that because gender and race bear different relationships to class, these analogies misdirect us.
